I found myself re living many of the stories he relates, so closely did they resemble several of my own adventures in Barbados.
I recommend Absolutely Barbados highly, it s title could not have been better chosen I live on the Island of Tortola, so was interested in reading about other islands, especially Barbados Julian s book is very witty and informative, I enjoyed his writing very much and now am keen to visit loved the local insight and island tips What I want from a travel book is an enjoyable engaging read, that will help me to maximise my enjoyment of the place I am reading about and soon to visit This book delivers on all fronts The author is an ex BBC man who writes in a entertaining and informative way that left me salivating for my departure to Barbados.
So many memorable chapters The hurricane, driving in Barbados, restless coffins and one of the last chapters where the author describes a day trip around the island are funny, full of character and warmth.
Besides a good read I want the book to help me during my visit Having been to Barbados before I wanted the book to show me the hidden missed bits from my first trip Again the book delivered By getting up 5 minutes earlier we saw the thoroughbred race horses having their morning exercise in the sea We dodged the very expensive Sandy Lane and enjoyed Cafe Luna with its great views and much better trip advisor rating are examples of this happening.
The book is as warm and welcoming as the island of Barbados
I absolutely loved Absolutely Barbados What a brilliant book For anyone who has a good knowledge of the island this will enhance your experience and take you to places you think you know but don t For the first time visitor, it is a must read and will enhance your holiday greatly The author writes with style, wit and charm and has captured the very essence of Barbados from its people to its places the island leaps into life on the page and will make you want to board the next flight out I have been coming to the island for years than I care to admit and thought I knew it all but undiscovered hidden gems abound throughout the chapters and Julian writes quite beautifully I d had the book on my kindle for some time and overheard a pool side conversation raving about it In moments, I was reading Thank you, Julian, for producing a great book, worthy of the island, I hope bookstores the world over stock this and many happy readers discover Absolutely Barbados.
I loved this book As we travel to Barbados every year to visit relatives many of the places Julian talks about I know I can picture the place in my head whilst reading his amusing take on it and it makes it all the enjoyable He makes Barbados sound so enticing, that you want to visit there and then and just hope that you come across some of the characters that Julian has in his time out there.
I love the Bajan talk pieces at the end of each chapter I have got used to a few over the years, but I still struggleI would definitely recommend this book.
I read this book whilst in Barbados and thoroughly enjoyed it and it was fun to see places that the author mentioned in his book A great read, particularly if you are planning a trip to this wonderful island
