Absolutely love this book Less has to go round the world to find out what life and love mean.
Was unable to determine what the story was about quit reading before the half way point I have no idea why this novel was chosen for a Pulitzer price there is less to it than meets the eye Some might find the sorrows and humiliations of Arthur Less to be amusing I just found them dull.
Fantastic book about love, relationships, and friendships as Arthur Less avoids ex boyfriends wedding by travelling around the world, but not the way he planned it Terrific ending I didn t see coming that wrapped the whole thing up in a beautiful beau It won the Pulitzer Prize, and you won t be disappointed.
Arthur Less is a novelist, an unsuccessful novelist He is going on 50 years old He did not publish until he was in his thirties At that time, he lived with a famous poet named Robert Brownburn for several years in San Francisco at the top the Vulcan Steps It took him five years to write At Robert s advice, he wrote a novel named Kalipso followed by The Counterglow and a third book named Dark Matter After the publication, Robert left.
Less had always liked older men, but this time, he turned to Freddy Pelu, a much younger man in his twenties He was a school teacher They were together for nine years One morning, Freddy told Less that he was seeing someone else and that person wanted him to be monogamous Less and Freddy s relationship ended and it was heartbreaking Less was now alone and almost 50 years old.
One day, Less receives a wedding invitation and also, a letter reminding him of an offer to teach at a University in Berlin He then opened a drawer and pulled out invitations, a teaching post, a conference, a writing retreat and He would accept them all He would not go to Freddy s wedding He sends his apologies and love to both Freddy and Tom, but he will be out of the country He prepares his trademark suit and he is off on his journey.
First, he will go to New York to do an interview with H H H Mandern, which gets him airfare to New York City and a free dinner with his agent Second is a conference in Mexico City Third, Less is off to Torin, Italy for a Prestigiosa award for his book named Dark Matter It has been recently translated into Italian Fourth, Less is off to Berlin, Germany for a week long course on a subject of his choice The University of Berlin is under the impression that Less is fluent in German.
The fifth is a trip across Morocco He would be adding on another birthday party for a woman named Zohra, who is turning fifty It was somewhere in the Sahara that Less would turn fifty The sixth trip would be to India, to a retreat center very close to a resort, a wonderful place to write and polish the final draft of his novel Finally, Less would go to Japan He met a gentleman at a ball game in San Francisco, who asked him if he would deliver an article to Tokyo The man s wife was ticked off with all his traveling and he would have to stay home Less agreed He would not think of his former boyfriend, Freddy, at all.
When Less returns, he gives up his home in San Francisco and moves to New York He has spent most of his money While there, he decides to go to a Broadway musical to cheer himself up, but ends up alone and in tears.
There are so many moments and unexpected turns in the countries Less visits All the places are beautifully described by the writer This is a love story about the coming and going of love and ends up bringing tears to your eyes.
Greer s writing is so witty, compassionate and endearingly funny I enjoyed this novel and would highly recommend it.
read this based on a best books of 2017 review on PBS I think This was an incredibly enjoyable read and had some pretty philosophical takeaways as the story progressed Really a beautiful book I finished it fairly quickly, which is a testament to how well its written as well as a great story Note that some similarities between the protagonist and me and our life experiences might have tainted my view a little bit.
