Buy this book if you want to try intermittent fasting and buy The Obesity Code if you want to learn in much greater detail the science of weight gain and weight loss and why fasting helps If you can only buy one of Dr Fung s books, I recommend this one It will change your life I m a doctor of public health I ve fasted myself up to 23 days and I help women lose weight with intermittent fasting.
I ve read a few books on fasting and a good bit of the scientific literature I ve just finished reading Dr Fung s book I highly recommend it.
Dr Fung speaks from experience From what I understand, he s supervised a few hundred fasters in his clinic He also draws from the scientific literature, and ends each chapter in the book with a list of references I liked that his book is both practical and scientifically sound.
Many books on fasting are written by lay people In my opinion, some of the advice you ll find in these books can harm you Dr Fung is an MD and it shows in his book You ll find Precautions to take before and during your fast Who should not fast including a list of diseases and explanations for each Tips and best practices to follow when you fast for example, Dr Fung recommends taking bone broth and a multivitamin during longer fasts In short, he s taken every precaution to make sure you ll fast safely, if you choose to.
Overall, I think this book is best in class when it comes to intermittent fasting I wish I had that book 2 years ago when first started fasting myself.

Reading this book was life changing I thought the whole low carb, high fat diet was all a bunch of hogwash to be honest but after trying everything else, following this healthy way to at and also understanding why so many diets have failed me in the past was wonderful I now eat better than I ever did before More food, healthy fats, lower but healthy carbs and I feel really good I have lost 52 pounds so far and got off my diabetes medications.
This past May I found myself having emergency surgery that forced me to be on IV for almost 14 days, was ONLY allowed water, ice cubes to have NO food I was worried because I was told years ago I had low blood sugar that I needed to manage due to history of diabetes in my family mother, sister, etc If I missed a meal, would get headaches, etc BUT after being on that IV and not being able to eat for so many days, it s as though it triggered something in my body and NOW I NO longer get headaches, NO longer NEED to have morning and afternoon snacks like the dietitians told me to, including no longer need to consume the fruits they told me I SHOULD have to keep my blood sugar up I was NOT overweight at the time 5 2 and 115 pounds and lost about 4 pounds during that 2 weeks, but I FEEL GREAT now Reading this book after the emergency surgery made me realize that there is something VALUABLE to fasting, though mine was Forced upon me for medical reasons.
Great book, HIGHLY valuable advice I am a health care professional I have been reading about intermittent fasting and Dr Jason Fung for quite some time After a rather lackluster go with the 5 2 regimen, I was weary But then I talked to a friend who said it is legit and to try eating between a 12 and 8 pm window The biggest hurdle was psychological by far So I did it And it was easy I read The Obesity Code first and just had to read this one This one was the favorite of the two I loved the testimonials I loved the before and after test results, the science and I loved how he laid out what the rules are and several different ways that you can incorporate fasting into your life I am convinced this is what is needed to reverse chronic disease and diabetes I don t have much weight to lose, but I lost over 15 pounds so far I am a foodie and wine lover so when I say I love food, I love food And this was easier than anything I ve ever tried I started with an eight hour window and consistently lost two pounds a week Then I started condensing it into a smaller window and then tried a 24 hour window At work, this is easy Did I mention it was easy When you see the results on the scale, it does motivate you to keep going assuming you aren t eating complete processed crap when you do eat I just went on vacation and fasted for four days after I returned I ate and drank to my heart s content on vacation and four days later I weigh less than when I left You feast and then you fast.
Every time I tell someone about this, their first response is that there is no way they could do it Stop the excuses If you want to lose weight, get healthy and fit into those clothes that you can t fit into any, do this Try it You have absolutely nothing to lose It truly makes your life easier and it s free to not eat We are just not meant to eat all the time.
